Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation - by Amanda Bach - I'd like to share with you this wonderful organization, the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation – a national non-profit organization providing information and raising awareness for children and adolescents with cancer and their families, advocacy for their needs, and research support so every child survives and leads a long and healthy life. Founded in 1970 by concerned parents of children with cancer, the group also engages in legislative dialogue on issues relating to cancer and cancer treatments. Children with cancer continue to be treated primarily with drugs that were developed 20-30 years ago. Scientifically, researchers have reached an era where new types of 'smart drugs' can be developed to treat cancer at a genetic level. These new types of cancer treatments have started to be developed for adult cancers and have showed great promise for cure. Children with cancer need these types of new drugs to give them Hope for a complete cure. Current debates in both the House and Senate could eliminate such future development of targeted drugs for children with cancer and other rare diseases. To protect biotech development of such essential biologic products, Ruth and the Foundation have begun a petition to support the “Patient Protection and Innovation Biologic Medicines Act of 2007.”

The Issue of Boredom & an Interview with Author Kim Marshall - Author of The Great Sex Secret: What Satisfied Women and Men Know That No One Talks About - Amanda Bach - Traditional sexual intercourse almost always produces an orgasm for men but rarely does for women. This is because the location of the clitoris prevents most women from getting sensitive, appropriate and sustained stimulation when they make love. Full satisfaction for both partners is neither easy nor obvious; it doesn't "come naturally." Why do some couples get bored with sex after a few months while others continue to enjoy making love throughout their adult lives? The conventional wisdom is that the way to stave off sexual boredom is variety -- that "great sex" consists of different positions, different techniques, different routines, different times of day, different venues, different toys and devices, different perfumes, different condom colors -- and different lovers. Much of contemporary sex material caters to this view, constantly feeding people new ideas on how to add to the sexual menu. Why else would all those women's magazines tout a sex article on the cover of every single issue?

About Womens Health
Featured Health Topic - Diabetes - A feature designed to help you find important health information on womenshealth.gov and girlshealth.gov - Sources by Amanda Bach - According to the American Diabetes Association, 18.2 million people in America have diabetes. But 5.2 million of these people have yet to be diagnosed because diabetes can be a silent disease. You could have it for years and never know it. During this time, your eyes, nerves, and kidneys could be harmed by too much sugar in your blood. The American Diabetes Alert Day, March 27th, is a one-day call-to-action for people to find out if they are at risk for diabetes.

What is Asthma? - by Amanda Bach - Asthma is a chronic disease that affects your airways. The airways are the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs. If you have asthma, the inside walls of your airways are inflamed (swollen). The inflammation  makes the airways very sensitive, and they tend to react strongly to things that you are allergic to or find irritating. When the airways react, they get narrower, and less air flows through to your lung tissue. This causes symptoms like wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), coughing, chest tightness, and trouble breathing, especially at night and in the early morning. Asthma cannot be cured, but most people with asthma can control it so that they have few and infrequent symptoms and can live active lives.

Your Skin
Your skin is your largest and most visible organ. It’s exposed to the elements daily, oftentimes without protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays. With Independence Day weekend already upon us, you’re probably planning to be outside more than usual.

In recognition of UV Safety Month, we want to give you the information you need to be proactive when it comes to taking care of your skin.

The Environment and Women's Health - The environment is everything around us wherever we are—at home, at work, or outdoors. It includes, among other things, the air we breathe, the water we drink and use, and the food we eat. Chemicals found in air, water, and soil can cause serious health problems in women and men, such as cancer and problems with the lungs or reproductive system. Children are more at risk than adults for health problems caused by substances in the environment. This is because their immune system, which helps their body fight illness, is not fully mature. They also inhale air more deeply than adults when they breathe, which makes them take in more pollution. Children also spend more time outdoors and are less likely to notice any health problems.

Skin Cancer - Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. The number of new cases of skin cancer appears to be rising each year. The number of deaths due to skin cancer, though, is fairly small. The good news is that skin cancer is now almost 100% curable if found early and treated promptly.

Tanning - You might think you look better with a tan, but the truth is, there is no such thing as a safe tan. When your skin becomes tan, it is really a sign that your skin cells have been hurt. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays are what damage your skin and these rays play a big role in the growth of skin cancer, the most common kind of cancer in the U.S. Today, more young people than ever are getting skin cancer.

Better Sleep & Interview with Dr. Amy Wolfson  - Source by Amanda Bach - Americans seem to be willing to do almost anything to cope with sleep-deprivation and emotional stress, but when push comes to shove, they are turning to quick fixes in lieu of obvious solutions. According to the findings of the 2006 Better Sleep Month survey, Americans are ignoring the fundamental steps to improve quality sleep and mood. It is well-known that sleep problems can be a key sign of depression. What people may not realize is that the reverse is also true sleep disorders can actually trigger mood disorders and depression. As researchers learn more about the underlying cyclical connection between sleep and our mental health, the important balance is becoming even more apparent. We have an interview (Q&A) with sleep expert and 2006 Better Sleep Month Spokesperson, Dr. Amy Wolfson. Dr. Wolfson is a sleep researcher, Professor of Psychology at the College of Holy Cross and authored the book "The Woman's Book of Sleep: A Complete Resource Guide.”

Trans Fat on Food Labels: Now You See It, Now You Don't - Office on Women's Health - When it comes to food labels that list levels of unhealthy trans fats, zero plus zero doesn't always equal zero. That's because newly implemented U.S. Food and Drug Administration rules on labeling allow foods with less than 0.5 grams of trans fats per serving to claim "zero" grams of trans fats on their labels.
Dogs Smell Signs of Cancer - This is a story from WomensHealth.gov - Office on Women's Health - By Amanda Bach - Now, a new study shows that man's best friend can also detect lung and breast cancer in breath samples. "When we heard anecdotally that there was a device out there that might be able to detect cancer at its earliest stages, before it even shows up on an MRI, according to the Pine Street Foundation, a nonprofit group in California that conducted the study. The group helps cancer patients who are facing tough treatment decisions.
Body Image and Your Health - As women, we all want to look and feel our best. This is not always easy, considering the busy life today's woman leads and the many responsibilities she may have. It can be tough to find time for exercising and eating right, not to mention controlling stress! Developing and nurturing a positive body image and a healthy mental attitude is crucial to a woman's happiness and wellness. What is body image?
Staying Active - An active lifestyle can help every woman. If you think you’re too busy with work, family, and all the other demands in your life, listen up! In fact, 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week can greatly improve your health.
Wellness - a guide to the healthy lifestyle - Fortunately Wellness is a concept that is becoming more and more the subject of conversation, so much so that you hear it defined as "a lifestyle that focuses on physical and mental well-being." Being fully aware of what it really consists of is not as easy. Let's take a look.
How and Where to achieve daily Wellness - Nearly 2000 years ago the Latin poet, Giovenale, expressed the ideal of Wellness with his motto "mens sana in corpore sano" (a sound mind is a sound body), stressing that an ideal balance is only obtained with 360 degree approach, where the health of your body goes hand in hand with mental well-being.
The Benefits of Wellness - It is by now fairly obvious that when we speak of total wellness, we also need to set and maintain a few goals; achieving adequate aerobic capacity, strong and toned muscles, flexibility, elasticity, and ideal body weight, a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
Wellness: What's myth and what's not - You must do a lot of sit-ups to send that belly away? Working out on a stationary bicycle will not make your legs bigger? Exercising for anything less than an hour is waste of time?
Beware of the Bug – It's Flu Season! - The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death – especially of older people, young children, and of people with certain health problems who are at high risk for serious flu complications.
What is postpartum depression? - by Amanda Bach - Postpartum depression is a treatable medical illness characterized by feelings of sadness, indifference, blue, unhappy, miserable, or down in the dumps, exhaustion and anxiety following the birth of your baby. Most of us feel this way at one time or another for short periods.

About Your Children Health
What about Asthma? Your child might be having an asthma attack - by Amanda Bach - Asthma is very common among children, teens and adults. It is a disease that causes the airways of the lungs to tighten. An asthma attack is when your lungs aren’t getting enough air to breathe. Asthma is a chronic disease that affects your airways. Your child might be having an asthma attack if he or she has trouble breathing, wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), coughing, chest pain, chest tightness, especially at night and in the early morning. Asthma cannot be cured, but most people with asthm can control it so that they have few and infrequent symptoms and can live active lives.

Tough Love for Tiny Teeth -- Office on Women's Health - Baby teeth may not be permanent, but dentists say they require just as much cleaning and care as adult teeth. - The reason: Neglecting them can cause your child pain and create lifetime consequences for their dental health. About 20% of children already have tooth decay by age 3, according to the American Dental Association. Not only do these kids experience pain from cavities, they run the risk of having their permanent teeth come in incorrectly, said Katie L. Dawson, president of the American Dental Hygienists' Association, and a dental hygienist in Oakland, Calif.
Body Image and Your Kids: Your body image plays a role in theirs - “On a diet, you can’t eat.” This is what one five year-old girl had to say in a study on girls’ ideas about dieting. This and other research has shown that daughters are more likely to have ideas about dieting when their mothers diet. Children pick up on comments about dieting concepts that may seem harmless, such as limiting high-fat foods or eating less.
Mental Illness Exacts Heavy Toll, Beginning in Youth - Researchers supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) have found that half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14, and that despite effective treatments, there are long delays — sometimes decades — between first onset of symptoms and when people seek and receive treatment.
Parents of Children with Autism Find Help at the Children's Health Council - Recent reports in California if an unexplainable jump in autism cases - 13% in 2004 alone - are once again bringing the mysterious brain disorder to the forefront of national attention.

About Career & Employment
The Salary Gap Between Women and Men - Sources by Amanda Bach - Back in 1974, few Americans would have been surprised to learn that women earned less money than men. Women who did work outside the home often worked part-time or in lower-paying jobs. Few women entered professions such as law, medicine and accounting. Although women have made significant gains in education, the pay gap between college-educated men and women persists, experts say. While some may label as myth the assertion that 30 years later, in 2006, women still earn less than men, statistical data confirm the reality that a gap continues to exist between salaries earned by men and women. In fact, a 2003 survey by the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE) shows that women who work full-time, year-round, earn 76% of what men earn. According to NAFE, the gap between men's and women's pay narrowed by only 2 percent between 1991 and 2001.  In a study released in March, Ross found that the median hourly pay for California men with a bachelor's degree was $31.03 in 2006 while women with the same degree earned $24.75. A new report to be released today by the American Assn. of University Women sheds light on what is holding many female graduates back — and what they can do to catch up.

Women in Business: A Demographic Review of Women's Business Ownership - Sources by Amanda Bach - Women-owned firms increased nearly 20 percent, while all U.S. firms grew by seven percent over the latest period studied (1997 and 2002), based on a report released by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration. The report uses newly released U.S. Census and other data to describe women's contributions to the economy.

Job Openings and Labor Turnover: DEC 2005 - By Amanda Bach - Finally there's some good news with the job openings and labor turnover as of the last day of December 2005. The job openings, hires, and total separations rates were all essentially unchanged in December, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. This release includes estimates of the number and rate of job openings, hires, and separations for the total nonfarm sector by industry and geographic region.

METROPOLITAN AREA EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT - By Amanda Bach - DECEMBER 2005 Unemployment rates were lower in December than a year earlier in 273 of the 367 metropolitan areas, higher in 80 areas, and unchanged in 14 areas, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. Thirty-three metropolitan areas registered jobless rates below 3.0%; 24 of these were in the South. Four areas recorded rates of 10.0% or more. The national unemployment rate was 4.6%, not seasonally adjusted, down from 5.1% a year earlier.

Recently, we're also seen the employment numbers continue to pick up as they did for the last two quarters of 2005. According to the (BLS) and many independent research firms note the job market will continue to improve in many industries. Retail salesperson is still the highest growing job that is projected to increase over 700,000 from now till 2014, according to the (BLS).

What is mentoring & why do we need a mentor? - By Amanda Bach - It seems perfectly clear that, although it is not fatal to lack a mentor, it certainly helps one a great deal to have one, both in technical and conceptual knowledge, learning from a broad base of experience and rapidly gaining a wealth of contacts.

The conundrum of the glass ceiling - By Amanda Bach - National Association Of Women Business Owners - Why are women so persistently absent from top corporate jobs? It is 20 years since the term “glass ceiling” was coined by the Wall Street Journal to describe the apparent barriers that prevent women from reaching the top of the corporate hierarchy; and it is ten years since the American government's specially appointed Glass Ceiling Commission published its recommendations.

Thinking About Cleaning up Your Credit? You Might Think Again - By Amanda Bach - "Credit repair" as advertised on the radio, TV, and Internet tends to be, at best, a waste of money and, at worst, a scam that would simply defraud you or (perhaps worse) involve you in fraud yourself. Even if a credit repair company is legitimate, there's nothing they can legally do that you can't do yourself at no cost.
Is Bankruptcy Right The Right Thing for You? - By Amanda Bach - According to the credit counseling and the National Foundation for Consumer Credit, some experts recommend that if you cannot pay back outstanding consumer debt in three to five years, bankruptcy may be the best option for you (of course, that doesn't include long-term loans like mortgages, which are normally repaid in 20-30 years).

Children Safety Tips
Did you know that children can drown in as little as one inch of water?
Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children ages 1 to 14.  Children can drown in a variety of circumstances – during water recreation (such as swimming and boating) or when a young child is left unsupervised for a short time in the bathtub or around the home with access to nearby pools and hot tubs.

A child can drown in as little as one inch of water, and drowning is usually quick and silent. A child will lose consciousness two minutes after submersion, with irreversible brain damage occurring within four to six minutes.

Parents and caregivers need to understand the dangers of drowning and know the proper steps to take to protect children.

Car Seat - 'How To’ Knowledge Retained by Parents - Sources by Amanda Bach - New Study Shows Car Seat Clinics Are Effective, according to Safet Kids Worldwide. Based on data from car seat checkup events conducted in 29 states in February 2005, Safe Kids found that parents successfully changed their behavior and retained their child passenger safety knowledge six weeks after receiving hands-on instruction. —even though Safe Kids Worldwide recommends that kids who have outgrown car seats ride on booster seats until they are about 4 feet, 9 inches tall and 80 to 100 pounds. Most children reach this height and weight between the ages of 8 and 12.
Never Leave Your Child Alone - Sources by Amanda Bach - How Does A Hot Car Affect Kids? From 1996 through 2000, more than 120 children – most of them three and younger – died from heat stroke after being trapped in a vehicle’s passenger compartment. This is a serious public health issue, and one that is entirely preventable. General Motors and the National SAFE KIDS Campaign want to end these needless deaths by reminding parents and caregivers about the dangers of leaving children in, or allowing them to play around cars.
Home Water Safety - by Amanda Bach - What You Need to Know - In 2004, an estimated 340 children ages 14 and under drowned in or around the home. Of these children, more than 80 % were ages 4 and under.

Pool and Hot Tub Safety - by Amanda Bach - What You Need to Know - In 2003, 285 children died from accidental drowning in a swimming pool.  Every year, thousands more are treated in emergency rooms for near-drownings. Most young children who drown in swimming pools were last seen in the home, had been missing from sight for less than five minutes and were in the care of one or both parents at the time of the drowning. Don’t be one of the 66 % of parents who have little or no awareness about entrapment risks. Find out how to protect your children in pools and hot tubs.
Boating Safety Tips - by Amanda Bach - What You Need to Know - In 2004, 55% of children ages 14 and under who drowned in reported boating accidents were not wearing life jackets. It is estimated that 85% of boating-related drownings could have been prevented if the victim had been wearing a life jacket.
