Reply from Gail:
Thanks, I am working on getting My daughter
into a preschool twice a week and told my boss I need to work a straight 8
hour shift for a while to help my girl. They are letting me do that. And
they will compensate my pay so I can still pay bills. What a great job.
Thank you Joy :-)
Q:
Dear Joy, I
am a 34 year old single mom of a two year old little girl who was born
with a cleft palate that was fixed May of 2001. Carly is a very very
smart little girl but she is not saying many words. Other kids her age
have more words than what she does. I love my daughter so much and I
worry that because I am having work 10-14 hours a day that she is being
affected by it and I am feeling really guilty. I refuse to be on public
assistance because I want Carly to know that to get anywhere in life we
have to work for what we want in life. Her father walked out on us when I
found out I was pregnant. Since Carly was born he has only paid $300 in
two years. I feel guilty having to work so much but I love my daughter so
much that I want to do the best I can to provide her with everything she
needs. I don't know how to help my precious girl talk. Can you give me
some advice? Please help. Thank
you so very much, Gail M.
A:
Dear Gail, thank
you for writing to us at SingleMom.com. It's not unusual that your two
years old daughter doesn't talk much. Yes, part of it because you work
long hour and your daughter doesn't have a chance to see you much. You're
obviously doing a wonderful job of raising her... You work hard to make
living for both of you without the father's support. You also refuse to
get public assistant. Don't we all wish that your daughter will somehow
understand that.
As you already know, the first five years of a child are extremely
important. The more you talk to them, play with them, & show them that
you love them, the better they will grow and become a positive person in
life. Since you don't have much time, I hope you can somehow spend time
with her in the weekend... Take her to places with a lot of kids. Let's
her play with other children, so that she doesn't get intimidated by other
kids... Talk to your babysitter about this... Since you are not with her
during the day...
I wish you the best & please let us know how it goes with your daughter.

Making the Most of Your
Child's First Five Years encourages and promotes the healthy development
of Canada's youngest children. It is based on the latest emotional, social
and intellectual early childhood development research. A child's brain
does not grow automatically with age, but it is shaped instead by
experiences, both good and bad. Parenting is a tough job. A child's first
years are critical for setting the stage for the kind of person they will
become. As parents and caregivers, we can make a difference that lasts
forever.
