"Financial Aid & Social Services Aid"

Second Week Of March

Q:

"Hi Joy, My name is M. I am a 17 year old single mother. My son is 2 years old. I have a part time job. I am a full time college student at Louisiana State University at Alexandria. I am very curious on how to receive any kind of financial assistance for my son and I. I have friends who say that they receive financial assistance from the government for being a single mother and being a full time student in college. If possible could you send me information on how to go about getting this help from the government. I am in desperate need of help right now (financially). I would very much appreciate your help. Sincerely, M. Y."

A:

"In reply to M., thank you for contacting us at SingleMom™.com. As far as we know, "Financial Aid" should be available at your college. If you are a full time or part time student - taking from 6 to 12 units per semester/quarter and you don't make much money per year. You're eligible for financial aid such as State grant (depends on each State), Federal grant, "work study", and loans.

You should ask your 'Financial Aid" to apply for it. It usually takes 6-9 months to get approve. However, the counselor should be able to assist you with more information. You can also apply for some kind of 'low-income' grant for student. Again, it depends on each State and school as well.

www.ed.gov/prog_info/SFA/StudentGuide/ - The student guide: financial aid from the U.S. Department of Education.

You can also try to contact the WIC program - www.fns.usda.gov/wic/ - The WIC program for women, infants & children. They offer variety of helps through local agencies & offices with toll free number & much more.

You can try to apply for extra money, food stamps, and health care for your "County Social Services Department". This is probably what your friend has mentioned to you.

All useful information about grants, available money from the government or any other non-profit organization for single mothers. Unfortunately, there isn't that many grants that available to single mothers. We'll keep looking out for you with all the latest information.
