Q:
"Hi Joy, My name is M. I am a 17 year old single mother. My son is 2 years old. I have a part time job. I am a full time college student at Louisiana State University at Alexandria. I am very curious on how to receive any kind of financial assistance for my son and I. I have friends who say that they receive financial assistance from the government for being a single mother and being a full time student in college. If possible could you send me information on how to go about getting this help from the government. I am in desperate need of help right now (financially). I would very much appreciate your help. Sincerely, M. Y."

"In reply to M., thank you for contacting us at SingleMom™.com. As far as we know, "Financial Aid" should be available at your college. If you are a full time or part time student - taking from 6 to 12 units per semester/quarter and you don't make much money per year. You're eligible for financial aid such as State grant (depends on each State), Federal grant, "work study", and loans.
You should ask your 'Financial Aid" to apply for it. It usually takes 6-9 months to get approve. However, the counselor should be able to assist you with more information. You can also apply for some kind of 'low-income' grant for student. Again, it depends on each State and school as well.
