The Dreaded Interview
Your resume and cover
letter got you through the first few hurdles and you have been selected for an
interview. Before your interview has been scheduled, the interviewer will
already have reviewed your resume and verified your employment history and
skills, so be sure you have all of your dates and facts straight.
Any inconsistencies with your resume and interview will raise red flags
and you may fail the interview, so be sure to practice interviewing with a
friend.
Your resume should have
shown examples of your skills as a team player, but now you need to show that
you can be a part of their team. An interviewer will form an opinion of you
based on your interaction. So in order to make the best impression, you need to be
prepared, know what you can expect, and know how to handle it if things don't go
quite as you had planned. Remember to be sincere, polite and enthusiastic...
But don’t over-do it. Also,
keep as much eye contact as possible and speak in a clear and confident voice.
If you remain relaxed and
confident in yourself, your skills, and your ability to do a good job, then
you’re on the right track. Keep
in mind that your experience, skills and personality are being evaluated to
determine whether you and the company are a good match - you, as an individual, are not being judged, ranked or rated.
Don't take it personally if you are not hired. If you have made a good
impression, you may be called back to interview for a similar or another
position in the company.
