I was surfing yesterday and found this fantastic

It was a kind of salute—showing each other their purple finger tips. A salute
to individuality, to oneness, to the Power from above. Iraqi citizens submitted
willingly to dipping their fingers in purple ink to ensure no double voting in
the joy of voting freely for the first time in decades. Tears flowed, smiles
broadened and shouts were raised—not just in Iraq, but all across the globe.
Much controversy swirled around the Iraqi elections and even the most ardent
supporters admit it is only the first of many steps to establish Iraq as a
democratic nation. And yet it was hard not to be touched by the glint of triumph
in the eyes of those who dipped their fingers into the well of democracy.
Freedom is
indelible.
Many Iraqis trudged long
distances to take this historic step. And they had to do it twice—first to
register and then to actually vote. TV reports even showed an elderly woman who
had been pushed, in a wheelchair, seven miles to the polling place.
The indelible ink on those Iraqi fingers was not only a means of preventing
multiple votes but it was also a reminder to these citizens that freedom is
indelible too. It is dyed into the fabric of humanity not because of any human
action but because “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their
Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and
the pursuit of Happiness” (US Declaration of Independence).
So this was not just a political victory. It was a victory for the inherent
spiritual nature of each individual, which cannot be forever squelched under
political oppression, ignorance or circumstance. Truth has power of its own. It
is the power of reality versus unreality, of substance over shadow, of good over
evil.
Each Iraqi who raised an index finger to the camera was also saluting the
faith and good will of their spiritual siblings everywhere, who prayed for this
moment of ratification of their Creator-endowed dignity.
Prayer will
also continue for a right resolution.
How
inspiring that many prayed for this moment regardless of their views on the
political, legal and military means that were used to achieve it. Opinions will
continue to differ as the process unfolds, but prayer will also continue for a
right resolution to the daunting challenges that remain.
And just as prayer advanced the Iraqi people to this shining moment, it will
continue to illumine the hearts and minds of those entrusted with the task of
shaping a government, rebuilding the infrastructure and developing all the other
instruments of a successful democracy.
What is required is continued prayer that affirms not only the “unalienable
Rights” of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” but the Creator-endowed
abilities of each individual to intelligently and gracefully accomplish their
necessary tasks.
Safe and sure pathways to further freedom.
Mary Baker Eddy made
discoveries about the spiritual nature of God and man that advanced still
further the cause of freedom. In the Christian Science textbook Science and
Health with Key to the Scriptures, she writes: “God has endowed man with
inalienable rights, among which are self-government, reason, and conscience. Man
is properly self-governed only when he is guided rightly and governed by his
Maker, divine Truth and Love.”
As more and more individuals focus their thought on these spiritual facts, a
light goes out to the thoughts of humanity as a whole, and like the slow-dawning
day reveals safe and sure pathways to further freedom.
We raise our salute to those Iraqis who followed the light of freedom to
stamp out the dark night of their own history. We cheer with them, celebrate
with them and renew our resolve to pray with them for further evidence of their
oneness, their individuality and their spiritual right to progress.
