Beware of the Bug – It's Flu Season!

Running Low? How Would You Like FREE* Gasoline for One Year?

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death – especially of older people, young children, and of people with certain health problems who are at high risk for serious flu complications.

Every year in the United States, on average:

  • 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu.
  • More than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications.
  • About 36,000 people die from flu.

Don't let the flu get you! The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu shot or vaccine each fall and by practicing good hygiene. Simple actions, like covering your mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing; washing hands often with soap and water, or cleaning hands with wipes or gels that contain alcohol, are effective things you can do to stop germs and prevent illnesses.

Remember:

  • You cannot get the flu from the flu shot.
  • The shot will not prevent all types of flu, nor will it prevent other viruses with “flu-like” symptoms.
  • The ability of the flu shot to protect you depends on two things: 1) your age and how healthy you are and 2) the similarity or "match" between the virus strains in the vaccine and those in circulation.
