to the beautiful world of "Adopting Motherhood" by photographer Elena Rue. Her
works have been seen in ODS Adoption Community of New
England, WorldLearning.org, & many more community sites. Prior to that she
had also work for DoubleTake Magazine.
September, 2005 In her photo documentary, Adopting
Motherhood: Families Brought Together by Single Adoption, Elena Rue the
shows the happy, sad, frustrating, and heartwarming moments that go along with
single parenting. In this body of work Rue focuses on a community of women in
New England who have decided to adopt children both from the United States and
abroad. Many of them are active in an organization called SPACE (Single Parents
Adopting Children from Everywhere) and garner a lot of their support from fellow
adoptive parents.
“These
photographs, taken over a year and a half period, are a glimpse into the lives
of single adoptive mothers and their children. More importantly, they are an
attempt to capture some of the graceful ways in which families are created.” In
an effort to display these images to serve as both an inspiration and resource,
Rue has created a website. The project can be viewed at

Elena Rue: Photographer
Elena Rue is a
documentary photographer who chooses to focus her work on the changing face of
American families. In addition to her work with single adoptive mothers she has
also photographed gay and lesbian parent families and interracial families.
Rue’s interest in documenting diverse family life stems from her own
inter-racial family. Her older brother Carl is adopted from Thailand. She is
currently studying photography and documentary studies.
