Breast Feeding Tips for New Moms

Breast FeedingBreast feeding is very important for new a born for it helps them build up their immunity. This is the reason why most mothers will be advised to breast feed the baby right up to the first birthday. Breast feeding can take some time to master and most new moms will struggle with it during the initial stages.

A few tips below will help new mothers to gain their confidence in breast feeding and latch on the tricks of getting it right:

  • Start soon – It is important that the child is breastfed about an hour after delivery. The more time you waste in breast feeding the baby the more difficult it is going to be for her to latch on to the breast. Do not feed the child any water or baby milk from a bottle but instead just keep putting her to the breast frequently and soon she will learn to suckle at the nipple for nourishment.
  • Calm mind – Mothers who are apprehensive about the feeding process will usually not fare very well in calming the baby and helping her feed. It is important for the mother to be relaxed and comfortable in her environment. It may even help to play some soothing music while feeding, and if you are easier with others having left the room do convey so. Remember the calmer your mind is the better you will be able to connect with the baby and the better your chances of successful feeding, since the child is quick to read your discomfort and get uncomfortable too.
  • Right posture - It is very important that you maintain the right posture when feeding the baby so that the baby is able to latch on to the nipple easily. Never lie down to feed the child since this tends to cause ear infections. You should be sitting up and holding the baby in a posture that supports her neck. With one hand you will need to hold the nipple while guiding the child gently towards it. Checking out the right posture in books and on the net will help master this pose.
  • Avoid the bottle – Bottle fed babies will often give up on breast very quickly. This is because it is easier to get the milk from the bottle. The child is fed without needing to apply any effort. In the case of the breast the child will have to suckle hard for the milk to flow. Bottle fed babies will almost always choose the easy way out and give up on the breast completely.

Breast feeding is an integral part of motherhood and it is important for the child and the mother too. While it may take some time for the child to nurse, do not give up since most mothers take some time before the kid is able to feed perfectly. In addition, breastfeeding helps keep the baby healthy.
