Lisa believes that career success is a consequence of having a dream and making it a reality. Ever since she was twelve-years old, she knew that she wanted to become a lawyer and never let anything stand in the way of her achieving this goal. She advises, “A lot of times people have an idea of what they want to do, but they allow events around them to shape their path instead of being proactive.” Having strong convictions and faith in herself, Lisa has attained her dream. Today, she holds the highest legal position at Spherion Corporation.
For Lisa, the journey is just as important as the destination. Prior to her appointment as General Counsel, she deferred law school for three years to serve as a public accountant. “Being open to new experiences as they present themselves is important. But sometimes you have to create your own opportunities in order to move forward,” she says. The experience Lisa gained in accounting helped to prepare her for corporate transactions and litigation.
The next logical step on her path: a law degree from the University of Miami in 1994. Shortly after graduation, she joined a law firm in Fort Lauderdale. One of the partners noticed her talent and as a next move, recommended her for a position at Spherion Corporation. Lisa jumped at the opportunity and began working under the General Counsel. He retired a year later and she was selected to succeed him. Now, she is responsible for overseeing the entire Legal Department.
Lisa’s fervor for law is matched only by her dedication to her family. “My two kids motivate me daily. I make sure that I’m there for the doctor appointments, plays, and dance recitals. Watching them grow and learn helps me to do the same for myself,” she says. Lisa’s optimism enables her to juggle between work and family responsibilities more easily than most. She knows the value of creating a timetable and sticking to it. “It’s important to focus your energy, pace yourself, and not let distractions bother you. You can’t lose control of your schedule and allow other people’s priorities to dictate where you should be. Learn to say ‘no’ if necessary,” she recommends.
This insightful leader believes that having a positive attitude is key to exercising your power. Lisa says, “Your outlook can really change your chances for success. Sometimes your frame of mind can get you further than your ability. If you look at a situation as an opportunity as opposed to an obstacle, you’ll go a long way.”
