Below are a few tips that will help you with, do it yourself furniture fixing projects:

  • Repairing scratches - A huge problem with furniture is the fine scratches that peel off the finish and expose the underlying layer. These scratches do not damage the sturdiness of the furniture much, but they do make the furniture look ugly. In most cases these scratches can easily be covered with a furniture marker (you can buy them in different shades of wood color). In case they are too many and too find, you can use a mineral spirit solution to clean off the surface and this help to remove the muck from the scratches and make them less visible.
  • Removing stains - Stains also attack furniture often and tables are the ones to suffer the most spills. Coffee stains and food stains are the common ones with ink and crayons also following closely. While some stains will go away with simple wiping, for others you may need to use a solvent or mineral spirits. If the stains are too stubborn you may need to refinish the entire piece.
  • Fixing legs - Right from small stools to tables to chairs, everything has legs. These legs are joint to the rest of the furniture with nails and adhesive. This is why in case of a fall or when chairs are used other than gently, these leg joints may be the first to come apart. In case the damage is extensive, a professional will be needed to get the job done. If the leg simply needs to be fitted back in you can do so using furniture adhesive and even nails and nuts. However, if the leg in question belongs to a chair, it is always better to seek professional help since if not fixed properly it could lead to a serious accident.
  • Renew finish - Another common problem with furniture is that it gets old and looses it sheen. In case you wish to renew the finish simply pick the liquid polish of your choice and some wax and get to work. Apply the polish first, let it dry and rub it with wax. Your furniture will regain its lost gloss within a matter of minutes. In fact it helps to keep some furniture wax handy in the house and gloss up your furniture every few weeks or so in order to keep it clean and well polished.

DIY furniture fixes are not very difficult and in some cases don’t take more than a few minutes. However, in case you are dealing with antique furniture, do consult a professional before you get to work on your piece, since it could damage the piece irreparably.
