 Exercising While PregnantPregnancy is a time when exercise is the last thing on your mind. Most women will eat well during this time, take their medicines and vitamins on time and also plan for the new member of the family, but exercise often takes a back seat. This is because most of us presume that exercise is to lose weight and since there is no need to lose weight during pregnancy, we overlook exercises.

We exercise to stay fit and healthy and to also keep our muscles strong and our blood circulation smooth. All of these requirements are increased in the body when a woman is pregnant. In short the need for a good exercise plan is very important during pregnancies. However, the plan must be well formulated so that there is no danger to the fetus in any way.

Some pregnancy related exercise issues are discussed below:

  • Walk – When you are pregnant, it is best to give up the treadmill until you have deliver. You should tone down your running into a walk and choose the ground instead of the treadmill. Accidents are possible on a treadmill and you can hurt yourself severely while walking on the treadmill when pregnant. However the ground does not pose any such problems and the fact that you can control your speed in accordance with you stamina is also a huge plus of walking on the ground.
  • Avoid certain exercises – When pregnant, it is best to steer clear of the heavy weight section. Squats, stomach crunches, sit ups and other similar exercises that stress on the tummy region should be shelved for the gestational period. Light weights are recommended but these should not be lifted without having a helper around.
  • Concentrate on legs – The leg muscles are the ones that you need during the delivery, and this is the area that you should focus on. The strength leg muscles is very important. Right from light lunges to cycling on the static cycle; you need to do it all. Focus on building strength in your legs but never opt for heavy weights in this process.
  • Yoga – Yoga is a fairly safe form of exercise while pregnant. Of course you need to work with an experienced instructor so that you are sure of the stretches. When it comes to yoga, it is important to keep changing the exercises in keeping with the trimester of the pregnancy.

When you exercise during your pregnancy, it is important to be aware of any pain that you may feel during the exercise. In case you do feel a pain, you must stop the exercise and report the issue to your doctor. With a qualified instructor it is safe to work out during your pregnancy. In fact not only is it safe, it is beneficial to work out during pregnancy so that you are able to enjoy a better health quotient and ensure an easier delivery.
