Initially infants are not able to control natures call and that is why we have a need or diapers. However, over time as kids grow up they get potty trained and we can kiss diapers good bye. Some kids will come out of diapers a bit early while others may take a little longer. In some cases a properly toilet trained kid may have difficulty controlling his bladder when asleep. This leads to bed wetting and in some cases may call for intervention too.
Below are some tips that will help you in lowering the bed wetting instances and also keeping the child from feeling ashamed and humiliated:
- Precautions - There are certain precautionary measures that will go a long way in reducing the bed wetting incidents. To begin with do not let your child tank up on liquids before heading to bed. Avoid giving the kid liquids at least and hour or so before bed time. Have the kid empty his bladder two or three times before he goes to bed. In some cases waking up the kid once at night to go to the bathroom again does help to prevent a bed wetting accident.
- Preparations – Despite all the precautions, accidents are bound be happen. It will help to prepare for these accidents in advance. Using a waterproof method to keep the mattress dry is very important. A simply plastic covering will help in this case. Also do keep extra bedding set close at hand. An extra set of pajamas and underclothing will also help to clean up quickly after an accident occurs.
- Do not tease - Bed wetting tends to embarrass the child and this will often make the child lose self confidence. Do not tease or allow other people in the home to tease since this will only worsen the situation. If you feel that teasing the kid is going to make it any better, you are sadly mistaken. In fact the pressure of the teasing will make the child even more nervous and could worsen the situation. In case of an accident, do not reprimand or tease, simply clean up the mess and assure the child that it is not his fault. Punishing the kid for bed wetting should be totally avoided.
- Medical help – In case you find that despite taking great care your kid is wetting his bed almost every other night, it may be time to see a doctor. There are several therapies and medicines that are known to be affective in the case of bed wetting and learning about them will help your cause.
Keep in mind that if the child wets the bed one or twice, there is hardly cause for concern. However, in case the problem is frequent only then you will need to give it some thought and find ways to combat the issue at hand. In most cases doctors do not worry till the child is over 6 years and is still wetting his bed regularly.
