Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS)

HIMSS ScholarshipsThe HIMSS Foundation is an Illinois not-for-profit corporation organized and operated exclusively for charitable, scientific or educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. The HIMSS Foundation serves as the philanthropic arm of HIMSS, providing support and assistance to the organization, its members, and the industry through:

  • Financial assistance (scholarships) to students healthcare-IT related fields
  • Providing access for students to the Dorenfest Institute database
  • Providing financial relief/assistance for special need-based programs issues

HIMSS Foundation will be accepting scholarship applications for 2012 from August 1st to October 15th, 2012.

The HIMSS Foundation annually awards scholarships to HIMSS student members who have achieved academic excellence and have the potential to be future leaders in the healthcare information and management systems industry.

Ten scholarships will be awarded this year to the student(s) deemed most deserving as determined by the HIMSS Foundation Scholarship Review Board.

Foundation Scholarships

Healthcare Information Management Systems

Three scholarships are awarded (one per level of study) to an undergraduate, Masters and PhD student enrolled in a program related to the healthcare information and management systems field. In addition to the $5000 scholarship award, the winner will also receive an all-expense paid trip to the Annual HIMSS Conference and Exhibition. (Some restrictions may apply.)

Applicants for the Healthcare Information Management Systems scholarships must fulfill these minimum requirements:

  • The applicant must be a member in good standing of HIMSS
  • The primary occupation of the applicant at the time the scholarship is awarded must be that of student in an accredited undergraduate, Masters or PhD program related to the healthcare information or management systems field. The specific degree program is not a critical factor, although it is expected that programs similar to those in industrial engineering, operations research, healthcare informatics, computer science and information systems, mathematics, and quantitative programs in business administration and hospital administration will predominate.
  • Undergraduate applicants must be at least a first-term junior when the scholarship is awarded.
  • Previous Foundation Scholarship winners are ineligible.

Richard P. Covert, PhD, LFHIMSS Scholarship for Management Systems

Awarded to a student pursuing a degree from an academic program (undergraduate or higher) that engenders the use of Management Engineering. In addition to the $5000 scholarship award, the winner will also receive an all-expense paid trip to the Annual HIMSS Conference and Exhibition. (Some restrictions may apply.)

Applicants for the Richard P. Covert, Ph.D., LFHIMSS scholarships must fulfill these minimum requirements:

  • The applicant must be a member in good standing of HIMSS
  • The primary occupation of the applicant at the time the scholarship is awarded must be that of student in an accredited undergraduate, Masters or PhD program related to the healthcare management systems field. The specific degree program is not a critical factor, although it is expected that programs similar to those in industrial engineering, operations research, mathematics, and quantitative programs in business administration and hospital administration will predominate.
  • Undergraduate applicants must be at least a first-term junior when the scholarship is awarded.
  • Previous Foundation Scholarship winners are ineligible.

HIMSS Chapter Supported Scholarships

The Chapter scholarship are awarded by local chapters to a student of healthcare informatics.

The amount of the Scholarship is $5,000 and is given annually.

This scholarship is awarded to a HIMSS student member who exhibits excellence and future leadership potential in the healthcare information and management systems industry.

Applicants for the HIMSS Chapter Scholarship must fulfill these minimum requirements:

  • The applicant must be a member in good standing of National HIMSS and the South Florida Chapter
  • The primary occupation of the applicant at the time the scholarship is awarded must be that of student in an accredited undergraduate, Masters or PhD program related to the healthcare information management systems field. The specific degree program is not a critical factor, although it is expected that programs similar to those in industrial engineering, operations research, healthcare informatics, computer science and information systems, mathematics, and quantitative programs in business administration and hospital administration will predominate.
  • Undergraduate applicants must be at least a first-term junior when the scholarship is awarded.
  • Previous Foundation Scholarship winners are ineligible.

New England HIMSS Dvora Brodie Scholarship

The New England Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) awards a scholarship for a student of healthcare informatics. Established and funded by the HIMSS New England Chapter in 2005, this scholarship is in honor of Dvora Brodie, a dedicated HIMSS member and HIT professional who died of ovarian cancer in 2003.

New York Chapter Scholarship 2 Awards Offered

The New York State Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) awards a new scholarship for a student of healthcare informatics. Established and funded by the HIMSS New York Chapter, this scholarship is awarded to a HIMSS student member who exhibits academic excellence and future leadership potential in the healthcare information and management systems industry. New York student members are all encouraged to apply for the scholarship.
Applicants must submit an essay of no more than 500 words – (details are stated on the scholarship application)
Applicants must be willing to actively participate as a Student Liaison to the Chapter Board if selected.
