"Make your kids join sporty activities that need them to exert physically."

Obesity is a very real problem afflicting our kids. The number of ailments that obesity brings along with it is well known. As mothers it is very important that we ensure that our kids are not getting obese, and take every step possible in this direction. While it is important that the children stay away from junk food, very important is to make our kids exercise more. Children should be able to eat whatever they like and burn it off instead of having to go on a diet.

A few tips below will help you to encourage your kid to exercise more:

  • Sport activities – Make your kids join sporty activities that need them to exert physically. Football, soccer, tennis, horse ridding and skating are a few examples of such activities. If the child develops an interest in the sport, it will be easy to get the desired exercise without forcing the kid to follow mundane exercise plans in gyms or at home. In case you find that your child is not attracted to sports, then you need to try to exercise at home. However, best is to try hard to make a sport attractive to your child. Another option is swimming; you might get your kid interested in swimming while presenting the activity as a must for all kids, as a safety issue.
  • Avoid driving the car where walking is possible – Let your kid walk to school or ride a bike, if possible. The extra exercise will help the child tremendously, and you can also present this as an act to save the environment. If you can organize a group of kids who walk to school, with one adult escorting them. That would be the perfect balance between safety and exercise. Of course, provided that walking to school is an option.
  • Stay active indoors – Instead of having the kids sit around watching television when in the house, involve them in physical activities. Right from helping with the laundry, putting the dishes in their place, walking the dog, cleaning their room, etc, all of it will work to keep the kid active through the day.
  • Plan active holidays and vacations – When you plan your vacations, make sure you pick places that offer the kids enough exercise options. Camping, cycle tours, etc. are all great options. The more you expose your kids to physical fun, the more likely they are to adopt this lifestyle and maintain it even in their adult life.

Do not ignore your child’s exercise needs since some effort on your part can ensure that you raise a healthy and fit adult. It is a fact that adults who were obese as kids are rarely able to shed off the weight later in life, and often suffer from serious ailments like diabetes and heart disorders. Of course it will help to keep junk food from becoming a regular item in your child’s plate but do focus more on the exercise aspect of the weight loss.
