When thinking of a hot beverage most of us will stop at coffee or tea and in the case of a cold beverage the list mostly begins and ends with lemonade. There is a lot more to the cold beverage than some lemon juice mixed with water and sugar.
Below are fantastic home made cold beverages that will rock your family and friends and earn you many compliments:
- Melon slush – This one is real easy to make. All you need a water melon or musk melons and some mint leaves and a bit of honey. Simply deseed the melons and cut them up into small cubes and put them in the freezer for an hour or so. Remove from the freezer when you want to make yourself a cold drink and mix a spoonful for honey with the melon chunks and churn. The ice in the frozen fruit lends it a thick and slushy feel with the honey adds some sweetness. Simply garnish with a few mint leaves that will help bring in added flavor to the drink. The melon slush is easy to make, healthy and of course quite nice to drink on a hot summer afternoon.
- Mint soda – Again here the idea is to keep it simple and yet refreshing. You will need mint leaves, molasses or honey and some unsweetened soda. Simple churn all these in a mixer and strain into a glass. In case you prefer to have some chunky bits of mint leaves in your drink, simply avoid straining the drink. Adding ice to it after you have poured the drink into a glass will help to keep this clear drink cold. This is a nice and bubbly drink and a much better option as opposed to aerated drinks.
- Ice-tea – This one is very simple if you use the pre-mix available in most super markets. Simply add the pre-mix to a glass of water and your drink is ready. However, if you wish to do it all from scratch, it will help to work with herbal teas than otherwise. Boil a spoon or two of the tea leaves in half a glass of water. Once the leaves have left their color, set the boiled water aside to cool. Add this water to some cold water, add some honey and if you like flavor it with lemon or peach essence and your ice tea is ready to drink. Using fruit teas also helps bring in a lot of flavor to this drink. You can also make the beverage with tea bags instead of tea leaves if you so desire.
These home made beverages are great to send along with the kids to school and you can also be sure that there is no preservative in these drinks. So the next time you have the desire to drink something cold, try out these beverages instead of opting for the same old lemonade or worse still an aerated drink.
