While we take great pains to ensure that our kids don’t get sick, and will make them wash their hands before meals and follow all other similar hygienic ways, often the problem lies in the refrigerator. Most of our food stuff goes into the fridge and stays there for quite some time before we consume it. We presume that this keeps the food safe but things can be very different.
A dirty fridge contaminates the food as opposed to keeping is fresh and safe and several diseases like diarrhea and several other sicknesses find their roots here. Below are some tips on how you can keep the fridge free of disease causing germs:
- Clean spills – Often the germs will flourish in areas where something has been spilled. Right from milk to juice to even food gravy that will spill on the fridge sides will become a haven for germs and fungus. These are the spots that you need to clean instantly. The germs that grow here can contaminate the rest of the food and make you violently sick.
- Keep food segregated – It is very important that you keep all cooked foods in air tight containers so as to keep the smells of foods getting mixed. Also this prevents the food in the box from picking up any germs in the fridge. Keep the meats in the meats section and the milk where the milk cartons should go and the vegetables should be kept in the green area. The areas of the fridge receive different temperatures and help to keep the food safe and segregated.
- Clean before storing – Most of us will dump everything into the fridge as soon as we get back from the store. This means that all the germs from the super market have gone straight into your refrigerator. Always wash the vegetables and fruits before putting them into the fridge. Similarly clean the milk cartons and all other plastic containers before you store them in the fridge. This ensures that the fridge does not get contaminated and will also require much lesser periodic cleaning.
- Anti- septic cleaning – When cleaning the fridge make sure that you work with a natural antiseptic. Add some soda bicarbonate to warm water and clean the insides of the fridge thoroughly. In case the meats sections has blotches of blood on the ice, defrost the entire fridge and clean it out thoroughly. Leave the door of the fridge open for about an hour so that the channels are all aired out fully.
