Microwaves are an integral part of almost all our homes. Right from the cooking to the re-heating we seem to use microwaves for it all. Needless to say, these microwaves do tend to get dirty real fast. By far the easiest way to keep the microwave clean is to try to avoid spills. Heating or cooking food on a removable platter and covering the food will prevent spills and splatters. If spills and splatters happen, then the easiest way to clean them is to do it immediately. Burning spills makes cleaning much harder, thus we need to avoid getting to the point of having burnt residues in the microwave. It is tough to clean a microwave because we cannot simply dip it into water and scrub it from inside out.
Below are some cleaning tips for the microwave that are easy, effective and best of all chemical free:
- Steam method - Place a bowl of water in the microwave. Turn the microwave on and set the timer to 5 to 7 minutes or till you find that the water is well heated. Turn off the microwave but keep the door closed for a while. The water vapors will soften the grime. All you need to do now is take a clean cloth and wipe of this steam and along with it all the loosened grime from the inside walls. In case you wish to remove odors too, then add a dash of lemon to the water that you heat.
- Baking soda – If you find that the grime is very strong and simply repeat the process and add a tablespoon of baking soda to the water. The baking soda will end up with the steam on the grime and help loosen it. You can use a damp cloth to remove the baking soda and the grime together. Once the process has been completed leave the door of the microwave ajar to freshen the inside.
- Vinegar- Another remedy for grimy smelly dirty microwaves is vinegar. Here you have to use a dry cloth and dab it with some white vinegar. Simply swab the inside of the microwave with this damp vinegar drained cloth and leave it for a few minutes. Afterwards adopt the heated water technique and let the steam to the rest of the work. Wipe with a dry cloth and you will find that the microwave is as good as new. This is also a great way to remove the smells from the microwave and ensure that you disinfect it properly too. Keep the door of the microwave shut so that the remaining fumes from the vinegar can get to work.
Keeping the microwave clean is very important for the hygiene of your kitchen and also to ensure that the food you cook does not get the smell of burnt food. It is advisable to clean your microwave at least once a week, and also every time there is a spill. If you keep the door of the microwave open after every cooking session, you will be able to ensure that the smells stay out with greater ease.
