Our Families Our Future
|
Our Families Our Future is a Wyoming non-profit organization that helps low-income single mothers on their path to economic self-sufficiency. Our CLIMB Wyoming programs train and place women in demand occupations and careers that earn livable wages. Almost 40% of single mothers in Wyoming are living at or below the Federal poverty level, but the staff and partners of Our Families Our Future are working to reverse this statistic by empowering single mothers to improve their lives and the lives of their children.
Our intervention model is based on the Fleming Associates Young Parent Program which was established in Laramie County in 1986 to meet the educational, work and life skills needs of low-income single parents. This is a nationally acclaimed paradigm for moving disadvantaged single mothers out of poverty.

Single2Mother.org
|
Single2Mother.org - based in Seattle, WA. The day I stood watching my son’s father walk away, with his final words being "Have an abortion or do it on your own!". I was certain my life was over. That day marked the start of many changes, but little did I know with those painful words my destiny was born. As a single mom, I often found myself feeling lost and isolated. I attended playgroups, and parent support groups and never met another single mother. I became accustomed to the support of many various resources including friends and family, but still found nothing to address the issues of single mothering. Online, I searched for single mother resources in the Seattle area and found dating sites. But, that was not what I needed.

Finding a Mom’s Support Group
by Amy Allen Clark

Becoming a mom was both an exciting and scary time for me. I returned back to work full-time and, despite these great changes in my life, found that my work & friendships resumed back to what they were before I had my child. I still had people to talk to and was not really seeking anyone or anything else in my life. My life was busy and my days were full with working, caring for my child, and maintaining our home.

The Emotional Roller Coaster of Divorce
by Pauline H. Tesler, M.A., J.D., & Peggy Thompson, Ph.D.
Authors of Collaborative Divorce

Divorce is an emotional task unlike any other in modern society, and different people experience it in different ways. While some individuals go through nearly all of the extreme emotional states that we describe here, others have an easier time getting through this period and will maneuver these choppy waters with more skill. The important thing to remember is that all the emotions we discuss are normal, but while some are readily acknowledged by the people experiencing them, others are so uncomfortable that it's difficult even to admit they exist. The wide array of emotional states that many people experience during the early stages of the divorce process can diminish their capacity to think clearly, impair their judgment, and make rational decision making difficult or impossible.

Angels We Have Heard and Seen
by Jennifer Snyder
|
My favorite part of the holiday season is its steady reminder of angels. Christmas cards reflect angelic gatherings in star-filled night skies. Ancient carols tell of angels spreading great joy, or watching over shepherds and sleeping children. Decorative angels are prominently displayed on neighbors’ doors; swathed in gold and surrounded by a sea of fragrant greenery.

Time Savers for Single Moms
by Kelly Kennedy from www.singlemotherresources.com
|
There is no question that the life of a single mother forces one to stretch the limits and test the strength of your organizational skills as well as your time management. Foreign adoptions in U.S. decline for third year
Tougher policies in China and Russia are partly responsible

NEW YORK - The number of foreign children adopted by Americans has dropped for the third year in a row, a consequence of tougher policies in the two countries — China and Russia — that over the past decade have provided the most children to U.S. families.
Figures for the 2007 fiscal year, provided by the State Department on Friday, showed that adoptions from abroad have fallen to 19,411, down about 15 percent in just the past two years.
It's a dramatic change. The number of foreign adoptions had more than tripled since the early 1990s, reaching a peak of 22,884 in 2004 before dipping slightly in 2005, then falling to 20,679 in 2006.

On the Job, Nursing Mothers Find a 2-Class System

When a new mother returns to Starbucks’ corporate headquarters in Seattle after maternity leave, she learns what is behind the doors mysteriously marked “Lactation Room.”
Whenever she likes, she can slip away from her desk and behind those doors, sit in a plush recliner and behind curtains, and leaf through InStyle magazine as she holds a company-supplied pump to her chest, depositing her breast milk in bottles to be toted home later.
But if the mothers who staff the chain’s counters want to do the same, they must barricade themselves in small restrooms intended for customers, counting the minutes left in their breaks.
“Breast milk is supposed to be the best milk, I read it constantly when I was pregnant,” said Brittany Moore, who works at a Starbucks in Manhattan and feeds her 9-month old daughter formula. “I felt bad, I want the best for my child,” she said. “None of the moms here that I know actually breast-feed.”
Doctors firmly believe that breast milk is something of a magic elixir for babies, sharply reducing the rate of infection, and quite possibly reducing the risk of allergies, obesity, and chronic disease later in life.
