Financial Help Available at State Level
The purpose of this category is to provide resources about local supplemental financial assistance to those single mothers who are pursuing a course of instruction that will improve their income-earning potential. In most cases, scholarships may be used for tuition, books, utility bills, car maintenance, childcare, or any other financial need that contributes to the recipients' success in school. However, the guidelines for the manner in which the scholarship may be used are at the discretion of each scholarship provider, and rules of admission may vary from state to state.
Also, keep in mind that community college financial aid offices historically have been under-funded, and have not had the resources to make sure that all eligible students were aware of the opportunities available to them. In many cases the offices have not had the staff to fully support the application process.
